Ballaghaderreen Golf Club
Ballaghaderreen Golf Club: A Gem in Parkland Golfing
Overview:
Nestled in the tranquil setting of Ballaghaderreen, this mature Parkland Course provides golfers with a unique and challenging experience. The relatively flat terrain boasts a design where the boundaries test the golfer's precision, particularly evident in the three holes where out-of-bounds areas lurk. The highlight for many is the 166 metres Par 3 5th, where golfers aim for a well-guarded postage stamp green. Additionally, remnants of the past, like a disused quarry, add character to the 1st and 9th holes.
Design and Specifications:
The course's blueprint was the brainchild of Paddy Skerritt, and it stretches over 5,339 metres, classified as Par 70. It boasts a standard scratch of 67, further emphasizing the challenges that await.
Historical Context:
The legacy of Ballaghaderreen Golf Club dates back to 1936. While it has moved through various locations, it finally settled in its current spot in the early 1950s. Affiliated with both the Golfing Union of Ireland and the Irish Ladies Golfing Union, the club proudly hosts approximately 300 members. These members are almost equally divided between Local and Distance Members.
Course Insights:
It may be a 9-hole parkland course, but don't be deceived by its compact nature. The emphasis here is on accuracy. And while bunkers are minimal, strategically positioned trees play a dominant role on the course. They serve as a daunting challenge on every hole, unless, of course, you're among the elite players for whom the trees are mere spectators! An added feature is the alternate tees on six of the back nine holes, ensuring variety and eliminating any trace of monotony. Golfers should be prepared for a course length of 5339 metres for men and 4663 metres for ladies, with a SS of 67 and 68, respectively.
Location:
The course sits approximately 3 miles from Ballaghaderreen. Thankfully, clear signage from the town ensures easy navigation for both members and visitors.
Key Personalities:
The club has seen prominent figures, such as 2007 President Martin Green and 2008 Captain Tom Kiernan, who were both Distance members. They, like all members, appreciate the club's value, often inviting friends to relish the affordable green fees.
Welcoming Atmosphere:
What truly sets Ballaghaderreen Golf Club apart is its members. Renowned for their warmth and hospitality, visitors can expect a friendly reception upon each visit.
